Clare Boothe Luce is credited for the saying "No good deed goes unpunished". I think she meant that the good deeds you do often go unnoticed or are even met with hostility. Well, in my case, my good deed was met with a kick in the face. Yes, that's right, a kick in the face. OK, well, before you get all upset, it was unintentional - and it wasn't from a human foot. I went to help a friend trim her goats' feet. I know, you heard a similar story before (see what happened when I helped a friend worm her sheep http://americanwayfarm.blogspot.com/2010/09/sheep-wrangling.html). Friend Elaine and I were chasing this particularly skittish yearling who had decided to run zip-zag through the barn to avoid us. She could have tried out for the Patriots football team as a running back. She saw openings to race though, determined to not be caught. After a few minutes it was evident that she was simply faster than we were and we weren't going to catch her no matter how long we tried. As we are both getting on in years (OK, I'm almost 70 and she's just over 70) this little yearling had a definite advantage. Where's a border collie when you need one? I decided the next time she went running past me I would simply grab a back leg and hang on, which I did, and quickly regretted it. She was running at full speed and she pulled me over, dragging me a few feet before she went off balance and fell over, at which time the leg I wasn't holding on to kicked out and hit me right between the eyes. I saw stars! But I didn't let go! Meanwhile my friend laid on top of her in a beautiful full body restraint. After my head cleared I started to laugh. I really wish someone with a camera would follow me around when I decide to do things like this. Two old ladies tackling a young goat. We won! Man, we've still got it!
